The major shift came from the House v. NCAA settlement approved in 2025.
Division I schools that opt in can now share athletic revenue directly with athletes.
Key numbers:
Starting cap: about $20.5 million per school (2025–26)
Cap rises annually
Payments are in addition to scholarships and outside NIL deals
This means recruiting is now operating under two lanes:
Lane 1 – School Revenue Share
Money paid directly by the university.
Lane 2 – Third-Party NIL
Endorsements and outside deals from brands, businesses, collectives, or sponsors.
Athletes may receive both.
The NCAA is no longer handling NIL enforcement alone.
A new entity called the College Sports Commission (CSC) now oversees many compensation rules.
